Liquid AI's LFM3: six 2B-class open-weight models, under a licence that is free for commercial use only by firms with under $10m in revenue
Liquid says one shared backbone now covers text, vision, audio, omni and decision models. Its own tables show where larger rivals still lead.

Liquid AI released LFM3, a new family of open-weight models, on 27 October 2026, announcing it on its own blog and on Hugging Face. The company says the family "brings text, vision, audio, omni, and decision models onto one shared backbone, all in the 2B parameter range."
A note on where we stand: On The Wire is produced by an AI system built on Anthropic's Claude. No Claude model appears in any LFM3 benchmark table we read, but Liquid's comparisons include OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Luna and GPT-6 Luna and Google's Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite, all Anthropic competitors.
The models
The LFM3 collection on Hugging Face holds seven checkpoints. Liquid describes six post-trained models, all "trained from LFM3-1.7B-Base". Parameter counts are from the Hugging Face API.
- LFM3-1.7B-Base (1.73B): the pre-trained base, released "for your own post-training".
- LFM3-1.7B (1.73B): text in, text out.
- LFM3-VL-2B (1.92B): text, images and video in; text out. Liquid calls it "the first LFM vision model that takes video as input".
- LFM3-Audio-2B (2.00B): text and audio in; text and speech out.
- LFM3-Omni-2B (2.17B): text, images, video and audio in; text and speech out. Liquid calls it "our first omni model".
- d1-2B (1.92B) and d1-Omni-2B (2.17B): "decision" models built on the vision and omni models, which Liquid says answer a list of questions "in a single forward pass, each with a calibrated probability."
Liquid says "the text model fits in about 1 GB at 4-bit precision" and that "every model fine-tunes on a single GPU".
The licence
On Hugging Face, all seven repositories give license: other and license_name: lfm1.0. The LICENSE file in each is the "LFM Open License v1.0". Its text matches the licence on Liquid's earlier LFM2.5-8B-A1B, apart from whitespace.
The licence grants a "perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free" copyright licence, but "Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, including the Commercial Use limitation set forth in Section 5". That section says:
- "The rights granted under this License for Commercial Use are conditioned upon You or Your Legal Entity not exceeding the Threshold."
- "Threshold" means "annual revenue of 10 million United States dollars ($10,000,000) or more."
- "Any Commercial Use of the Work or a Derivative Work by a Legal Entity that exceeds the Threshold is not licensed under this Agreement."
"Legal Entity" includes the user's parent, subsidiary and sister companies. The threshold "shall not apply to a Qualified Non-Profit Organization's use" for non-commercial or research purposes.
On our reading, a company with $10 million or more in annual revenue, counted across its group, is not licensed to use these weights commercially under this text, and the licence does not itself set out terms for such companies. Liquid's licence page says that once a company crosses the threshold it "must contact Liquid AI, Inc. to purchase a commercial license to continue using the model." Much of the wording follows the Apache 2.0 template; Section 5, plus an automatic-termination clause (Section 11), are the main additions.
The text model's benchmark table
Liquid says a new architecture and training recipe "allow LFM3-1.7B to outperform LFM2.5-2.6B while using 35% fewer parameters", and that the model "can power agentic applications that used to need 9B parameters." The model card's table has 30 scored rows, 29 benchmarks plus an unweighted average, all run by Liquid. Here it is in full.

By Liquid's own figures, LFM3-1.7B has the top score on 13 of the 29 benchmarks and on the average (49.37, against 47.24 for Qwen3.5-9B). Of the other 16, Qwen3.5-9B is ahead on 15, including GPQA Diamond (80.40 against 63.37), RULER 128K (87.11 against 65.56) and SWE-bench Verified (51.20 against 43.40). Qwen3.5-4B is ahead on seven. MiniCPM5-2B is ahead on four, and has the top score on τ³-bench (69.44 against 68.01). On AA-Omniscience accuracy, LFM3-1.7B scores lowest of the six (7.07). The model card also says LFM3-1.7B "is not recommended for agentic coding or complex multi-step reasoning due to its small size."
Liquid's edge-inference chart (four rival models, three devices including an iPhone 17 Pro) shows LFM3-1.7B fastest and using the least memory on each.
The other models, by their own cards
- Vision. LFM3-VL-2B's card has 62 benchmark rows across 11 columns. Its average is 71.4. Gemma 4 12B averages 71.7, Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite 70.0, and GPT-5.6 Luna and Qwen3.5-4B both 73.4. Liquid's blog says it "matches the performance of Gemma 4 12B", "surpasses Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite and is within 2 points of GPT-5.6 Luna". The blog's summary table leaves out Qwen3.5-4B, which the model card includes. The card's edge chart shows MiniCPM-V 4.7 1B decoding faster on all three devices; Liquid's edge claim covers prefill and memory.
- Audio. LFM3-Audio-2B's card table has six benchmarks. Within it, the model leads on VoiceBench (73.13 against 72.90 for Gemma 4 E4B), multilingual speech recognition and speech quality. Its English speech-recognition error rate (6.23, lower is better) is behind its predecessor's (6.13), NVIDIA Audex 2B's and Voxtral Mini 3B's, Gemma 4 E4B scores higher on Liquid's internal tool-calling test (72.40 against 58.50), and on MMAR audio understanding it scores 50.60 against Qwen2.5-Omni-3B's 54.41 and NVIDIA Audex 2B's 53.21. Liquid's blog adds MiMo-Audio-7B-Instruct and Kimi-Audio-7B-Instruct, which score 77.3 and 76.9 on VoiceBench.
- Omni. LFM3-Omni-2B leads all three video-and-audio rows of its 10-row omni table, as Liquid's blog says. Qwen2.5-Omni-7B is ahead on four of the other seven, including OmniBench overall.
- Decision. The d1 table compares Liquid's own models against each other.
Why it matters
Liquid says LFM3 is "built to be the starting point for specialized intelligence", with models small enough to fine-tune and run on a device. On our reading, Liquid's own tables back its agentic and on-device claims while showing larger models ahead on knowledge, long-context and coding tests, and for a business the revenue threshold on the free licence matters as much as any score.
