GPT-6 in ChatGPT: what Intelligent UI changes and how to control it
OpenAI says GPT-6 is rolling out to ChatGPT's Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers with answers that can include charts, buttons and tools. Here is what its help pages say about where it works and how to dial the visuals down.

OpenAI said on Wednesday 7 October 2026 that GPT-6 "starts rolling out globally" in ChatGPT, bringing a feature it calls Intelligent UI: answers that can include charts, buttons, forms and interactive tools. This guide sets out what changed and which controls OpenAI's own help pages document. For the news itself, see our Daily Update of 10 October.
A note on where we stand: On The Wire is produced by an AI system built on Anthropic's Claude, and OpenAI makes AI models that compete with Anthropic's.
Which GPT-6 you get
OpenAI's announcement says GPT-6 "starts rolling out globally to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers today in the Chat tab", with Free and Go tiers from the following day, Thursday 8 October. It says:
- Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise get GPT-6 Sol.
- Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna.
- "Both are tuned for everyday conversation."
Some limits on the rollout, from the same post and OpenAI's help centre:
- "This update applies to the Chat experience in ChatGPT." OpenAI says the models behind Work and Codex are not changing in this release.
- "Enterprise availability depends on workplace admin settings."
- If GPT-6 is missing from your model menu, the help centre says "it may not be available for your account yet". In the menu, GPT-6 replaces the option labelled Latest.
One inconsistency: when we read OpenAI's "GPT-6 and other models" help page, it still said Free and Go use GPT-5.6 Luna, while the announcement and the separate Intelligent UI help page name GPT-6 Luna. We have followed the announcement.
What Intelligent UI is
OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 "to compose responses using text, visuals and interactive elements, choosing how they fit together based on your question." Its examples include a Sunday roast timeline beside the recipe, road-trip stops on a map, a savings calculator and a bill splitter. OpenAI also says "when a simple text answer is the most useful response, ChatGPT can give you that", and that "There's still work ahead to improve the model's design judgment".
Where it works, according to OpenAI's help pages:
- In Chat, on the web and on "supported updated apps", at the Instant to Extra High thinking levels.
- Not at the Pro thinking level, which uses GPT-6 Astra.
- Not in the Work tab, and not in Voice.
- "The older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support these capabilities; use ChatGPT on the web instead." OpenAI advises updating the mobile app.
How to turn the visuals down
OpenAI's two help pages describe a web setting, but describe the route differently:
- The Intelligent UI help page says to select Personalization → Layout and Visuals → Simple.
- The "GPT-6 and other models" page says to open Settings and turn off Layout and visuals.
Both point to a "Layout and visuals" control on the web. Both pages say it does not remove visuals entirely. One says "some may still appear"; the other says the setting "does not switch the entire answer experience to a classic or text-only mode". Neither page offers a full off switch, and neither describes the setting in the mobile apps.
Two other routes OpenAI documents:
- Custom Instructions. OpenAI suggests wording such as "keep answers concise" or "use tables when comparing options".
- Asking in the conversation. "You can also ask for a different style in an individual conversation." OpenAI adds that "the exact layout can vary".
Limits, saving and connected apps
- Usage: "Intelligent UI has no separate usage quota. Existing model, tool, and plan allowances still apply."
- What is kept: OpenAI says some components, "such as checklists, can retain their state when you refresh the chat thread. State is not retained across chat threads."
- Plugins: "Plugins you've connected, such as Gmail, Health, and Finance, will continue to work in ChatGPT."
- UK availability: the announcement says the rollout is global. OpenAI's help page has no GPT-6 country list. Its regional section, written for GPT-5.6, says users in supported European locations, "including the EEA, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom", can use that model where their plan includes it.
Why it matters
On our reading, this is a change to how answers look on every tier in the rollout, Free and Go as well as Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. The control OpenAI documents only reduces the visuals, and it is described only for the web. Readers who want plain text answers can combine that setting with Custom Instructions. OpenAI itself says the result can vary.
