DeepSeek Breaks Its Own Rule: a ~$7.4B First Outside Raise at Up to $59B
The lab that swore off outside capital is closing a ~$7.4bn round backed by Tencent, CATL and Beijing's AI fund — at a valuation as high as $59bn.
- 01DeepSeek is closing its first-ever external raise — ~50bn yuan (~$7.4bn) — at a $52–59bn valuation, reportedly within weeks.
- 02Backers include Tencent (~10bn yuan), CATL (~5bn), founder Liang Wenfeng (20bn of his own) and China's state-backed AI fund.
- 03It reverses DeepSeek's long-held no-outside-capital stance — a state-flavoured endorsement of China's open-weight champion.

Reported 3 June 2026; expected to close within weeks.
DeepSeek — the lab behind the open-weight models that rattled the industry — is breaking its long-standing refusal of outside capital. It's close to raising about 50bn yuan (~$7.4bn), its first-ever external round, at a post-money valuation of 350–400bn yuan ($52–59bn), per Bloomberg and Reuters.
The backer list is telling: Tencent (~10bn yuan) and battery giant CATL (~5bn) as the largest outside investors, founder Liang Wenfeng putting in 20bn yuan of his own, plus NetEase, JD.com, IDG Capital and — notably — China's state-backed AI investment funds.
Why it matters: A lab that built its reputation on doing more with less, and on not taking outside money, reversing course — with Beijing's fingerprints on the cap table — is both a vote of confidence and a signal of national intent behind China's open-weight champion.
