Friday's wire was a big one — the US government floated owning a piece of the AI labs, Google rented a mountain of compute from SpaceX, and Anthropic argued the whole field should be able to hit the brakes.

1. Trump floats US government equity stakes in AI labs

Speaking on Friday, President Trump said the federal government may take direct equity stakes in leading AI companies, naming OpenAI and xAI. The mechanism under discussion is unusual: rather than buying in with taxpayer cash, OpenAI would donate equity to seed a proposed "Public Wealth Fund" — a sovereign vehicle the company outlined in an April 2026 policy paper, with the idea that AI gains flow back to the public.

Two caveats worth keeping straight. Anthropic is reportedly not in equity talks with the administration, against a tense backdrop (a February 2026 order for federal agencies to stop using its models after a Pentagon-guardrails dispute). And from the left, Senator Bernie Sanders is pushing further still — calling for 50% government stakes and a 50% tax on the labs' stock.

Why it matters: A sitting president floating government ownership of frontier AI labs — with rare left-right overlap on the principle — would reshape the relationship between the state and the AI industry.

2. Google to pay SpaceX ~$920M a month for compute

SpaceX disclosed a multi-year deal under which Google pays roughly $920 million per month from October 2026 to June 2029 — about $11bn total — for some 110,000 NVIDIA GPUs plus CPUs, memory and related kit. Google framed it as short-term "bridge capacity to meet surging customer demand for our agent platform, Gemini Enterprise," with a cancellation option after the end of 2026.

It's roughly half the capacity SpaceX is supplying Anthropic under a separate, larger arrangement.

Why it matters: When a hyperscaler the size of Google is renting GPU capacity from SpaceX, the compute crunch isn't a talking point — it's reshaping who depends on whom.

3. Anthropic argues the industry needs a "brake pedal"

Anthropic published a proposal — authored by cofounder Jack Clark and research-institute head Marina Favaro — calling for a coordinated, verifiable way to pause frontier AI development, so safety research can keep pace. The mechanism would let labs confirm rivals had genuinely slowed, rather than just promising to.

Their stated worry: recursive self-improvement — an AI designing its own successor — "might increase the risks of humans losing control over AI systems."

Why it matters: A near-trillion-dollar lab publicly arguing the field should be able to slow itself down sits in real tension with the growth-at-all-costs mood — and with its own IPO trajectory.
