Three moves worth your time this week, each linked to its source so you can go deeper.

Microsoft starts building its own

At Build 2026 on 2 June, Microsoft unveiled MAI, its first family of in-house foundation models — and the framing was pointed: the company "now wants to power its own products with its own models" rather than leaning on OpenAI. The line-up, per TestingCatalog's recap, includes MAI-Thinking-1 (a 35-billion-parameter reasoning model with a 256K-token context window, in private preview on Foundry), MAI-Code-1-Flash (a coding model now in GitHub Copilot), plus image, voice and transcription models. Microsoft claims raters prefer MAI-Thinking-1 to Claude Sonnet 4.6 and that it matches Opus 4.6 on SWE-Bench Pro.

Why it matters: it's Microsoft's clearest step yet toward reducing its dependence on OpenAI for frontier capability — and a direct play for the coding-agent market.

Anthropic moves toward the public markets

According to Fortune, Anthropic has confidentially filed draft paperwork for an IPO, reportedly at a ~$965bn valuation following a recent $65bn raise. The report cites expected second-quarter revenue of around $10.9bn and an annualised run-rate on track to pass $50bn.

Why it matters: if it proceeds, it would be one of the largest technology listings ever — and could see Anthropic reach public markets ahead of OpenAI. (Reported by Fortune; On The Wire hasn't independently confirmed the filing — read the source and we'll update as it develops.)

DeepSeek lines up its first outside raise

PYMNTS reports that China's DeepSeek is nearing a deal to raise ~$7.4bn — what would be one of China's largest-ever startup rounds. Named backers include Tencent and the government-backed National AI Industry Investment Fund, with founder Liang Wenfeng also investing. The lab is said to be prioritising AGI research over near-term commercialisation.

Why it matters: it puts serious capital behind the leading Chinese open-source lab — the team behind V3 and R1 — and sharpens the US–China frontier race.
