It's not a defection — the strategic direction is firmly toward Azure (a large share of GitHub's traffic and repositories is already there) — but it's a vivid measure of just how tight AI-era compute has become.

The crunch that explains it

This doesn't come from nowhere. GitHub's Copilot has been straining against capacity for months: it paused new sign-ups for its paid Copilot tiers in April, citing how agentic, multi-step coding workflows blow up compute demand, and on 1 June it shifted to usage-based "AI Credits," with users noting how quickly they burn through them. Layer on Amazon's announcement this week of a $10 billion data-centre campus in Missouri, and the picture is consistent: the AI build-out is enormous, expensive, and still not keeping pace with demand.

The counter-move: doing more with less

The other side of a compute crunch is the incentive to need less of it. Last week Cohere open-sourced North Mini Code, a coding model designed to run agentic software tasks on a single high-end GPU — a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts design that activates only about 3 billion parameters at a time, released under a permissive Apache-2.0 licence. Its benchmark claims are vendor-cited and deserve the usual pinch of salt, but the direction is the point: efficient, locally-runnable models are the hedge against renting capacity from anyone.

The shape of the day

Thin for genuinely new releases — no confirmed major model launch in the last 24 hours. A few "GPT-5.5" and "Gemini 3.1" items doing the rounds as "breaking" don't hold up: those are existing releases from earlier this year being recycled, not fresh news. The real signal today is infrastructural — compute is the bottleneck, and even the giants are improvising around it.
