Bun Says AI Rewrote It from Zig to Rust in 11 Days. Zig's Creator Says That's Not the Whole Story

The takeaway: Last week produced the most consequential AI-coding case study since the tools existed — and a bitter counter-story from the language it left behind. Bun, the JavaScript runtime Anthropic acquired in December 2025, says it rewrote its entire codebase from Zig to Rust in 11 days in May — one engineer closely monitoring Claude Code while the agents did the porting, from start to a fully passing test suite, by the team's own account. 6,502 commits, around $165,000 in tokens, and a claimed hand-written equivalent of three engineer-years. The next day, Zig's creator Andrew Kelley published his reply: a mix of pointed technical rebuttal, a broken business relationship laid bare, and a worry that has nothing to do with borrow checkers — that his language's community is being damaged by association with AI. Both posts topped Hacker News on consecutive days, at 786 and 788 points. They deserve to be read together.
The rewrite, as Bun tells it
Bun creator Jarred Sumner's post is the most detailed public account yet of frontier-scale agentic engineering. The motivation: Bun mixes a garbage-collected JavaScript engine with manually managed native memory, and by the team's own account the resulting bug class — use-after-free, double-free, leaks — persisted despite sanitisers, fuzzing and careful review. Rust's borrow checker turns that style-guide discipline into a compiler guarantee.
The method is the part practitioners will study. By Sumner's account: preparatory work had a Claude model build a porting guide mapping Zig patterns to Rust idioms and a lifetime analysis of struct fields across the codebase; the migration then ran on roughly 64 parallel agent instances across four git worktrees, with some 16,000 compiler errors grouped by crate and used as the work queue. Code from implementing agents went to separate "adversarial review" instances with fresh context, instructed to assume the code was wrong and hunt for the bug. Peak throughput touched a claimed 1,300 lines per minute — all, Sumner says, reviewed before commit. Total bill: ~$165,000 at API prices, on 5.9 billion input tokens, 690 million output — and 72 billion cached reads, a 12-to-1 ratio of cached to fresh input that is our prompt-caching explainer rendered at industrial scale.
The results, again by Bun's own numbers: the first Rust release fixes 128 bugs relative to the last Zig build, cuts binary size ~20%, gains 2–5% on HTTP throughput — and shipped with 19 known regressions found and fixed after the merge, with about 4% of the Rust living in unsafe blocks, mostly at foreign-function boundaries. Simon Willison, reading the same post, called it "a fascinating case study in taking on wildly ambitious projects with the help of coordinated parallel agents" — and credited the TypeScript test suite, quoting Sumner's own formula of "a language-independent test suite with a million assertions", as the thing that made the automation safe at all. None of the engineering claims have been independently verified; what's checkable from outside is that v1.4.0 exists in canary, the tests are public, and nobody has yet surfaced a contradicting failure.
The reply, as Zig's creator tells it
Kelley's response is not really about Rust. Some of it is technical rebuttal — link-time optimisation was available in Zig throughout Bun's life, he argues, and the binary-size wins reflect engineering work that, as he puts it to Sumner directly, "you should have done in the Zig codebase since the beginning"; he'd warned about Bun's compile-time metaprogramming abuse for years. But the heart of the post is relational and cultural. Bun's annual $60,000 donation to the Zig Software Foundation, he says, "silently stopped" after the Anthropic acquisition; scheduled meetings went unattended; by the time the rewrite was announced, the foundation regarded its most famous user as "a net liability".
And then there's the part that makes this a story about AI rather than about two codebases: Kelley writes that the Claude-to-Bun-to-Zig connection caused "a surge of drive by slop contributions" and an influx of what he calls tasteless AI enthusiasts into Zig communities, and that he feared his language becoming "associated with AI" — while finding himself "battling the marketing arm of Anthropic". Unusually for the genre, the post turns the knife on itself too: Kelley acknowledges he had "unprocessed emotions of resentment" that were obvious to readers before they were obvious to him, frames the failure as a business relationship rather than a personal betrayal, and says he's genuinely happy for Sumner's success.

Strip the heat away and the two posts agree on more than either admits: the Zig codebase had real, persistent memory bugs; the rewrite happened at a speed no human team could match; and the choice of Rust was about transferring a discipline from humans to a compiler — which is exactly the design you want when most of your code is about to be written by machines. Where they diverge is what got lost: a community relationship, a funding stream, and a language's claim on its own story. Terence Tao's rule from the weekend — use agents where a bug costs little — has a corollary this episode makes vivid: the costs of an AI rewrite aren't all denominated in bugs.
