A compression specialist just built Europe's top-scoring AI model: Multiverse's Quasar 438B

Multiverse Computing, best known for shrinking other companies' models, has released Quasar 438B — and independent evaluator Artificial Analysis scores it the strongest European model, ahead of Mistral and within a point of Claude Opus 5 on long-context reasoning.

Europe has spent three years being the continent that talks about AI regulation more fluently than it builds AI models. This week that got a little less true: Multiverse Computing, a Spanish company best known for shrinking other people's models, released Quasar 438B — and an independent evaluator now ranks it the strongest AI model to come out of Europe.

The numbers, and who checked them

The claim that matters here is not Multiverse's own. Artificial Analysis, the independent benchmarking outfit that has become the closest thing the industry has to a neutral scoreboard, scores Quasar 43 on its Intelligence Index — the highest of any European model it evaluates. For context, that puts it ahead of Mistral Medium 3.5 (30) and NVIDIA's Nemotron 3 Ultra (38), the latter carrying over 100 billion more parameters.

On long-context reasoning — the AA-LCR test, which measures pulling threads together across long documents — Quasar scores 75.0, level with Grok 4.6 and within a point of Claude Opus 5. On agentic coding (Terminal-Bench v2.1) it scores 69.3. Multiverse says the model beats comparable European models on seven of eight selected Artificial Analysis evaluations.

Those are strong numbers for any model. They are surprising numbers for this company.

The twist: a compression company built a frontier model

Multiverse Computing did not get here by out-spending anyone on scale. Its whole reputation is the opposite discipline — CompactifAI, a quantum-inspired method for compressing large models so they run cheaper and smaller. A company whose pitch has been "we make big models small" has now shipped a 438-billion-parameter flagship of its own — its first large model — and topped the European table with it.

That is the interesting part. The dominant story of the frontier has been scale: more parameters, more compute, more capital. Quasar is a data point on the other side — a team steeped in efficiency fielding a competitive model, which is exactly the kind of result you would expect to see if the "just add compute" era is starting to give way to one where architecture and training discipline matter more.

What you can actually do with it

Quasar is available now through Multiverse's CompactifAI API — sign up and send requests. It supports English and Spanish, and the company positions it as a reasoning model "built for enterprise-scale agents and coding." Speed is respectable rather than record-breaking: a 500-token response, reasoning included, in about 15 seconds.

One benchmark-topping model does not reset the map. Mistral is still Europe's household name, and a 43 on the Intelligence Index is a strong European score, not a global-frontier one — Anthropic's and OpenAI's top models sit higher. But "Europe's best" has been a thin field for a long time, and it just got a new leader from an unexpected direction: not a scale-first lab, but a compression specialist. If the next phase of AI rewards doing more with less, that is a company worth watching — and, for once, it is a European one.
